Why fly-in moose hunting, well there are many reasons. Let me tell you about some of my own and my friends and their moose hunting experiences. In the past our group were under the impression that fly-in moose hunting was too expensive, and over the years acquired the necessary paraphernalia to go to what we thought were remote spots on the cheap. This paraphernalia included such things as heavier vehicles to tow the rest of the stuff, boats, canoes, motors, etc. At one stage in our moose hunting careers we even invested in an old school bus that we converted into the moose hunters dream RV. The result of all this planning? Over the years we entered the Ontario moose draw, very carefully selecting what we thought was a combination of good moose hunting and availability of tags. Yes we did get some moose. We also suffered broken transmissions, overheated engines, flat tires, boat motors that got damage in transit, blown down tents and even a devastating roll over in our dream RV!! AS a result of our not too pleasant learning experiences, we started to haul even more equipment that would ensure us the ability to make repairs to our already overloaded vehicles, not if, but when they broke down on the road. Spare hunting and camping gear was also carried to provide us with peace of mind in the bush.

The hunting we experienced was reasonable for a group setting up tent in the bush, usually on a logging road or down a navigable river. Very often we would drive 18 hours to a favorite spot to find another group had claimed it, leaving us to drive around for hours to locate another suitable camp area. When we did get there, we then spent the best part of another day building a camp. Regardless of where we went, our hunting was always shared with others. Sometimes this was good and other times not. The thoughts of fly-in moose hunting were always at the front of our minds when the experience was bad.

Our first fly-in moose hunting trip was an eye opener to us. We simply loaded our personal gear into a jeep and drove to the base in central Ontario. After transferring our gear into the float plane and a 15 minute flight we found ourselves in a lake of our own with a fully equipped outpost camp. Boats, motors and canoes were present and the small camp was cosy with a great little wood stove. This fly-in moose hunting trip was a little expensive as it was in an area where tag availability was low and we did not receive one in the draw, so the outfitters fee reflected the cost of the tag. Regardless of the expense, it was the easiest trip we had been on and a bull moose was shot on day three leaving us free to fish, hunt ducks and grouse. We were sold on fly- in moose hunting. The small amount of gear we had to haul made a longer drive much more pleasant, so we found ourselves heading for north western Ontario where tag availability always allowed our group to get at least one and usually two tags. This meant that the fly-in moose hunt was less expensive having our own tags. Every year thereafter we filled our tags, and were not troubled by the presence of other or any of the downside of a road or river side hunt.
